In Mexico, 781% of people born into low-income families fail to overcome poverty.
Only 2% manage to ascend to the highest level.
The main objective of the report published by the Espinoza Yglesias Study Center is to analyze social mobility from one generation to the next and inequality of opportunity in the country based on data obtained from the ESRU Survey of Social Mobility in Mexico 2023 (ESRU-EMOVI 2023).
It analyzes: The state of social mobility in the economic and educational dimensions at the national level and its breakdown for five major regions; the dynamics of intergenerational poverty persistence in Mexico; and estimates the magnitude and composition of inequality of opportunity.
The results for Mexico are compared with those of 50 countries included in the Global Estimates of Opportunity and Mobility project database.
The results reveal the complexity and challenges of social mobility, as well as the urgency of adopting public policy measures to ensure that origin is no longer the destination in Mexico.
