In August 2022, Fundación Coppel and Nacional Monte de Piedad announced their first joint venture to promote access to education, job training and quality employment for young people in Mexico through 31 civil society organizations in 19 states of the country.
One year after the program was launched, the project has supported more than 12,828 “Jóvenes Oportunidad” through actions aimed at developing skills for life, work and entrepreneurship.
These results have allowed both institutions to renew their alliance in 2023 to carry out the second co-investment of the project.
By 2023, support will be provided to 38 organizations in 19 states of the country (Baja California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tlaxcala and Yucatán) that share the common goal of promoting social mobility for youth and reducing the problem of lack of decent employment, particularly for this age group and for people with disabilities.
Why support youth in Mexico?
There are 31.5 million young people (aged 12 to 29), around 301% of the country's population, living in Mexico. Among them are young people who have been able to complete their studies and access formal employment, as well as those who have overcome different situations and contexts to ensure their academic and professional development.
In order to ensure that more and more young people have greater opportunities to escape job insecurity and to offer sustainable solutions that generate positive and lasting changes in the life, educational and employment trajectories of the so-called "Opportunity Youth", collaboration is necessary between institutions with different scopes, such as Nacional Monte de Piedad IAP, Fundación Coppel and 38 civil society organizations, which were selected through an evaluation process of their initiatives and which during the following months will be subject to different success indicators, in order to measure the impact they had on the target population.
The objective
Among the common objectives of the programs of these organizations, priority will be given to improving the employability of 12,828 young people and people with disabilities through actions aimed at developing skills for life, work and entrepreneurship, as well as job placement, so that they can access and remain in decent employment or self-employment.
Testimonials
Javier de la Calle, general manager of Nacional Monte de Piedad IAP, explains: “For 248 years, our pawnshop has contributed to improving the lives of millions of Mexicans through a Social Investment Model based on the principles of effectiveness in development aid, and seeks to generate fundamental changes in the living conditions of people in vulnerable situations. We are extremely proud to be part of this alliance for the benefit of decent work and to promote the participation of different actors who, we know, can help us transform the reality of the social fabric of our country.” Rocío Abud, director of Fundación Coppel and of Social Responsibility of Grupo Coppel, comments: “At Fundación Coppel, we believe that people's origin does not have to determine their destiny, which is why we seek to be a factor of change that generates opportunities in different communities where we have a presence and that are in vulnerable situations, so that they can improve their quality of life, that of their family and that of their environment. “For us, ensuring that young people get their first job opportunity, become self-employed or find a decent job are priorities. We know that this is a first step towards ensuring that they achieve a quality career path.”
