The Employability Advocacy Workshop included 24 participants, ages 15 to 35, from six municipalities in Mexico City and six municipalities in the State of Mexico.
Some have participated in the defense of education and decent work, the promotion of human rights focused on working mothers, people with disabilities, the LGBT community, and youth, as well as the promotion of entrepreneurship and the social and solidarity economy. Several of them have already been actively involved in initiatives such as the youth advisory group at GOYN, the Manada Collective and EmprendeCON, and the University Chapter of COPARMEX CDMX.
During the course, participants not only received tools to strengthen their commitment to youth issues, but were also shown that advocacy is not simply an act of passive rebellion, but a manifestation of courage and imagination to actively seek improvements in their living conditions.
Each participant, through their experience, understood that solutions are achieved by taking firm steps and opening windows of opportunity. Practice demonstrated that achieving significant results requires daring and self-confidence.
The course not only reinforced the lessons learned during each participant's journey, but also consolidated the idea that young people are the present and the future, not only in their families and communities, but throughout the country. However, to ensure a solid future, the need for public policies that address the current lack of job opportunities, precarious wages, and poor education among young people was emphasized.
These policies must go beyond social programs or cash transfers, including specific initiatives aimed at the youth sector and their complexities in terms of employability and development.
At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant became a proactive actor, capable of influencing the direction of public policy. This course demonstrated that young people are key agents in building a solid future and that, with the tools they acquired, they are ready to assume that role in an active and transformative way.
To illustrate the findings regarding the importance of advocacy and public policies, this edition of Plataforma JuventudES presents the report on the workshop "Advocacy for Youth Employability in Mexico," prepared by Professors Sonia Jaquelina Romero Huesca and Blanca Elena Gómez García, both researchers at the Dr. José María Luis Mora Research Institute. Additionally, the workshop shares their experience and practice in their daily professional work through the voices of Gabriel Adalid Muñoz and Nancy Ancieto of GOYN-Mexico.
The course-workshop review "Introduction to Public Policy Analysis" is also included, along with reflections on collaborative advocacy by Paulina Cerdán Corona, executive director of the Center for Civic Collaboration. It also includes reflections on Public Policy Design and Implementation, written by Alan E. Palomo Villegas, advisor and Coordinator of advisors in the Senate of the Republic.
In short, this edition showcases experiences of impact on the development of public policies that are reflected in everyday life in the country's various social and economic contexts, as well as their connection to the common problems faced by youth in the areas of education and employability.
